Home reading guide

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr. Seuss.

Each day fill in the home reading log sheet (PDF 63.5KB) and return it to the class teacher when completed.

At Vardys Road we encourage all of our students to read every day.

As well as improving students' general reading ability, daily reading achieves the following:

  • provides mental stimulation
  • expands vocabulary
  • improves memory
  • develops stronger analytical thinking skills
  • increases general knowledge
  • improves focus and concentration
  • develops writing skills
  • improves the imagination
  • develops verbal ability
  • provides free entertainment.

The following guide shows the procedure for home reading awards and certificates:

  • reading sheet – record 20 daily reading sessions per sheet
  • home reading award – given for 1 reading sheet returned, the classroom teacher will sign and hand out in class
  • home reading certificate – given for 3 reading awards returned, the stage supervisor will sign and hand out at an assembly
  • merit award – given for 3 home reading certificates returned, the principal will sign and hand out at an assembly.
